Ever notice how inaccurate many sizes are when you try something on in a store? If you're like me, the size you wear at one store or in one brand is two sizes away from what you might fit at another store or another brand. So how do you know what you're getting when you can't try something on, such as when you're shopping at an online plus-size store?

If the website doesn't offer any sort of measurements with the clothing item description, you may not know what to expect. Unless it's a brand that you buy regularly, you may have to guess or go solely by their one-for-all size chart. And we all know how hit or miss that can be!

So if the store you're shopping online doesn't offer easy returns, you may end up stuck with an item that doesn't fit you – whether it's a waist size, an inseam that is too long or too short, or a skirt that looked like a miniskirt on the model, but comes down to your calves!

The first aspect to a successful online shopping trip is to already know your own measurements before you buy. The best way to get your measurements is to have someone else take them for you. Do not wear bulky clothes while having measurements taken, stand at a relaxed, but upright posture, and don't suck in that stomach! You may want to wear a size 16, but if you really should wear a size 18 and you're stuck in jeans a size too small all day, you'll regret it.

The second thing to take note of is the item description. Make sure it states the fabric content, all pertinent measurement information, and preferably if it is machine washable or dry clean only. If a measurement is not provided that you feel is essential, don't hesitate to contact customer service to request this information. Even if you think it sounds silly to ask how long the sleeves are from shoulder to wrist, if you know you have longer arms, it's best to ask before you buy!

The last piece of advice for being happy with your online purchase is to know who you're dealing with. If it is a relatively unknown store, don't hesitate to ask questions. Email the contact person or customer service on the site. Ask how payments are handled, how your items will be shipped, and any other questions you need to know about the plus size clothes they carry.

Many online plus size retailers are reputable and have better deals than you might find in stores. Just be sure to do your homework before splurging and you'll have a great online experience!
